A prophet honoured at home and abroad

The unprecedented achievements of Governor Akpabio have not gone unnoticed. Nationally and globally, groups and individuals have appreciated him as the epitome of good democtatic governance in Nigeria. He holds the Congressional Certificate of Recognition of the United States Congress, awarded to him in 2011. He also holds the highest national honour of Niger Republic, “Gold Humanitarian Services Award,” conferred on him by that country’s ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency, Alhaji Moussa Ibrahim.

A recipient of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), Akpabio has a string of honorary doctorate degrees from the Nigerian academia that is highly appreciative of the uncommon transformation that he has brought about in Akwa Ibom State. Some of the awards include Doctor of Management Science, from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Zaria; Doctor of Law, from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Doctor of Law, from the University of Calabar; Doctor of Law, from the University of Uyo; Doctor of Public Administration, from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and Doctor of Management Science, from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. Others are fellowship awards by several federal polytechnics, as well as the Nigeria Society of Engineers.

The media have not been left out in what appears a concerted effort to give honour to whom honour is due. Year in year out, media houses in the country make him their man of the year, in recognition of his outstanding performance. Akpabio was National Daily newspaper Most Outstanding Governor in Nigeria (South-South) in 2008; Thisday newspaper Nigeria’s Emerging Tiger, 2009; Daily Independent newspaper Man of the Year, 2009; National Daily newspaper Man of the Year 2009 and City People magazine Governor of the Year (South-South), for the same year. He was Encomium magazine Best Governor on Infrastructure, 2009; Best Governor (South-South), by the same magazine for that year; Excellency magazine Best Governor, South South, 2009 and Nigerian Tribune newspaper Governor of the Year, 2010. He received the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Performance in 2010 by the Nigeria Union of Journalists; Billboard World Best Governor in Nigeria and Outstanding Human Brand, 2010; The Sun Man of the Year, 2011; Silverbird Man of the Year, 2011 and Global Excellence magazine Man of the Year, 2011. Churches have also found Akpabio worthy of honour. He is a recipient of the Nehemiah Award of the African Church, and is a knight of the Anglican Church, Nigerian Communion, even though he is a staunch Catholic.

The Governor has in his kitty over 30 chieftaincy titles. These include, the Uko Akwa Ibom (awarded to him by the Akwa Ibom State Council of Chiefs); Utuenikang Ibibio; Iberedem Ibibio; Nta Nta Offiong Annang; Atta of Eket and the Nta Nta Oro.
